The top media owners in the UK are joining forces to level the playing field in mobile media.

The Leadership in Mobile initiative is being championed by independent market research company, Mediacells, on behalf of BSKYB and News International with other major players set to sign up.

The aim of the project is to provide a transparent set of monthly mobile website page impressions from the major UK media owners and make available the results to the UK press. Website log analysis is already underway and the first set of stats will be published by the end of Q1 2008.

The initiative comes at a time when advertising-supported content is becoming the dominant model in mobile while ringtone and wallpaper download revenues are decreasing. Mediacells provides the media industry with an award-winning methodology which aims to innovate in the way mobile website activity is measured.

Andrew Bagguley, Head of Mobile Strategy at News Group Newspapers said:

"We really need to get on and define how the media industry is going to measure success on the mobile internet.  It's important to track progress, measure effectiveness and set ourselves targets for growth.  News International clearly wants to demonstrate how effective The Sun & News of the World are in mobile, but we, as an industry, need a common language to compete effectively.  Mediacells’ independence and experience in media and mobile make them perfectly suited to interpret the data."

The need for an independent set of regularly-published mobile website statistics has never been greater with mobile operators, hungry for fresh revenue streams from their customers, and media owners, keen to supplement shortfalls in their traditional advertising revenues,.

“In light of recent operator announcements around mobile advertising, there is a need for independent data to assess the market opportunity. At a time when print and traditional broadcast media consumption in 18 - 34 year olds is on the downturn there has never been a more crucial time for media owners to take control of inventory and the way that inventory is reported. The Leadership in Mobile initiative is aimed at redressing the balance with a clear factual knowledge share between advertisers and content men to measure mobile consumption without the smoke and mirrors.” Said Brad Rees, managing director of Mediacells.

He continues, “The Leadership in Mobile initiative aims to pave the way for richer metrics for media owners to sell advertising, it’s that simple. By applying a standard method of mobile website analysis, which is fully approved by the technical and research departments of all major media owners taking part, the industry can really start monetising mobile.”

As search giants like Yahoo! make their commercial intentions clear on mobile with Google and Doubleclick not far behind, Mediacells believes it can complement the traditional web analytics approach with its unique and independent viewpoint of the mobile market.

The project starts with page impressions and will develop over subsequent months to include unique users by mapping mobile devices against consumer segments.
